86 Eighty-Six began as a light novel series written by Asato Asato with illustrations by Shirabii. It won the Dengeki Novel Prise, and Yen Press publishes it in English. The story takes place during a war between the Republic of San Magnolia and the Empire of Giad.

San Magnolia tells its citizens that the war is being fought entirely by unmanned drones, so nobody has to die. That is a lie. The drones are piloted by real people, and those people are the Eighty Six. They live in the Republic’s Eighty-Sixth district, they have been stripped of their citizenship, and the state does not count them as human. When they die, the official record still says zero casualties.

Vladilena Milize, known as Lena, is a young Republic officer who commands an Eighty-Six unit by radio from the safety of the capital. She hates how her country treats them, and she says so out loud, which makes her unpopular. Shinei Nouzen, called Shin, leads the Spearhead Squadron on the ground. Their conversations over the radio carry most of the early story, and the gap between what Lena believes and what Shin actually lives through is the whole point.

A-1 Pictures animated the series across two cours in 2021, with the final two episodes pushed back to March 2022 for production reasons. It adapted the first three light novel volumes. Fans widely rate it as one of the best mecha series of the decade, helped enormously by its soundtrack and by its willingness to sit with grief rather than rush past it.

There is still no confirmed second season. An announcement that spread online in April 2025 turned out to be an April Fools post. The light novels continue and reached volume 14 in September 2025, so there is plenty of story left to adapt. Until then, pick up a body pillow of Lena, Shin or another member of Spearhead.
