Honkai: Star Rail is a turn-based RPG from HoYoverse, the studio behind Genshin Impact. It launched on 26 April 2023 across PC, console and mobile and became one of the biggest releases of that year.

You play as the Trailblazer, someone who wakes up with a Stellaron implanted in their chest and no memory of how they got there. The Astral Express takes you in, and the train travels between worlds, dealing with those Stellarons before they destroy the planets they land on. March 7th, Dan Heng, Himeko and Welt make up the crew.

Combat is a straight-turn-based system with a twist. Enemies have a toughness bar tied to specific damage types, and breaking it staggers them and opens a window, so team building is about matching your damage to what the fight in front of you is weak to. It is more thoughtful than the genre usually manages, and it rewards actually reading the enemy list.

The writing is the other draw. Each world has its own tone, from the Soviet-inflected Jarilo-VI to the dreamlike Penacony and the Greek-myth-inspired Amphoreus, and the game moves between comedy and tragedy with real confidence.
