First and foremost, Azur Lane is a mobile game. However, even though it was only a single course in length, the anime series based on that mobile game ran from 2019 to 2020.

Four powerful nations—Eagle Union, the Royal Navy, the Sakura Empire, and the Iron Blood—form the “Azur Lane” military alliance to fight the Sirens using shipgirls—girls fused with naval warships—after the mysterious alien force known as the Sirens attacks Earth’s oceans.

There are four main nations in the Azur Lane universe (and I believe there are a few more, but I’ll stick with the four main nations). Ships from the Sakura Empire are easily recognized because they either have names that are clearly Japanese, such as Ayanami, or are all kitsune (fox) girls. The same is true of Iron Blood’s ships, all of which have names that sound German, such as Bismarck, and wear the iron cross on their clothing.

If you need a break, Azur Lane is a good series to check out, especially if you’ve played the game. I wouldn’t say that playing the game is required to enjoy Slow Ahead because you will likely get more out of it if you already know these characters (in my opinion, Laffey is the best girl and Yamashiro is the best destroyer, of course), but they’re all entertaining to watch!
