Bungo Stray Dogs is a manga written by Kafka Asagiri and illustrated by Sango Harukawa. It began in Kadokawa’s Young Ace in 2012 and Yen Press publishes it in English.

The hook is the naming. Almost every character shares a name with a real author, and their supernatural ability is named after that author’s most famous work. Atsushi Nakajima turns into a white tiger, an ability called Beast Beneath the Moonlight. Osamu Dazai can cancel out any other ability just by touching it, and his power is called No Longer Human. Once you notice the pattern, you start looking up the writers, which is a large part of why the series has such a loyal readership.

Atsushi is thrown out of his orphanage and left starving on a riverbank when he runs into Dazai, who is in the middle of a half-hearted suicide attempt. That meeting pulls him into the Armed Detective Agency, a group in Yokohama that takes on cases the police cannot touch. Their main rivals are the Port Mafia, and later a much larger threat arrives in the form of an international organisation called the Decay of the Angel.

Studio Bones has animated the series since 2016. Five seasons have aired so far, with the fifth running from July to September 2023 across 11 episodes and closing out one of the strongest arcs in the whole run. There is also a 2018 film called Dead Apple.

A sixth season has not been officially confirmed. The manga wrapped up the first part of its story in early 2026 and is currently on break, which explains the wait. In the meantime, the comedy spin-off Bungo Stray Dogs Wan! returned for a second season on 2 July 2026.
