Call of the Night (Yofukashi no Uta) is a manga by Kotoyama, the author of Dagashi Kashi. It ran in Weekly Shonen Sunday from August 2019 to January 2024 and finished at 20 volumes. Viz Media publishes it in English.

Kou Yamori cannot sleep. He has stopped going to school; he does not really know why any of it matters, and he has started wandering the streets at night instead. On one of those walks he meets Nazuna Nanakusa, a girl who seems to enjoy the night as much as he does. She is also a vampire, and she tells him that if he wants to become one too, he has to fall in love with her first.

That sets up a strange arrangement. Kou keeps meeting Nazuna after dark while he works out whether what he feels is actually love, and she keeps insisting she has no interest in him that way. Around them is a small circle of other vampires, each with her own approach to living hidden among humans, and a few people who are actively hunting them.

The series is more about the feeling than the plot. Nights in an empty city, vending machine drinks, and conversations that go nowhere in particular. It looks fantastic doing it too, with a purple and blue palette that has become instantly recognisable.

Liden Films animated both seasons. The first ran for 13 episodes from July to September 2022 on the Noitamina block. The second followed from July to September 2025 and pushed the story much further along. There is no confirmed third season, though the manga finished with plenty of material left unadapted.
