Cells at Work! (Hataraku Saibou) is a manga by Akane Shimizu. It ran in Monthly Shonen Sirius from 2015 to 2021, and Kodansha publishes it in English. It was Shimizu’s debut, and it turned into one of the most successful educational comedies ever made.

The setting is the inside of a human body, drawn as a huge city. The roughly thirty-seven trillion cells are all workers with jobs to do. Red blood cells deliver oxygen, white blood cells hunt down invaders, platelets patch up damage and everybody has an office, a uniform and a boss.

The two leads are AE3803, a rookie red blood cell with a terrible sense of direction, and U-1146, a neutrophil who spends his days violently killing bacteria and is far nicer than his blood soaked uniform suggests. Around them the body deals with scrapes, colds, food poisoning, allergies and worse, and each episode explains the actual biology while it happens.

The trick is that it genuinely works as science. Teachers and doctors have used the series as a teaching aid, and the platelets, drawn as a group of tiny children in hard hats, became a merchandising phenomenon on their own.

David Production animated the first season across 13 episodes in July 2018 and a second season followed in January 2021. That second season aired alongside Cells at Work! Code Black, a much darker spin-off set in the body of an unhealthy adult, animated by Liden Films. A live-action film released in December 2024 and spent weeks at the top of the Japanese box office.
