Date A Live is a light novel series by Koushi Tachibana with illustrations by Tsunako. It began in 2011 under Kadokawa’s Fantasia Bunko label and finished at 22 volumes, with a long list of spin offs and anthologies alongside it. Yen Press publishes it in English.

Space quakes have been destroying parts of the world for years, and the cause is a group of beings called Spirits who appear without warning and cause devastation just by arriving. The military solution is to kill them. Shido Itsuka is offered a different one by his sister Kotori and the organisation Ratatoskr. If he can make a Spirit fall in love with him and kiss her, he can seal her power away, and nobody has to die.

So Shido takes them on dates, with a team in an airship feeding him advice through an earpiece and treating the whole thing like a dating sim. It sounds ridiculous, and the series knows it, but the Spirits each carry real damage, and the story takes that seriously once the jokes are out of the way.

Tohka, Kurumi, Yoshino, Kotori and the Yamai twins have all built huge followings, and Kurumi in particular has been one of the most merchandised characters in the genre for well over a decade.

Five anime seasons have aired, in 2013, 2014, 2019, 2022 and 2024, along with the film Mayuri Judgment and the Date A Bullet spin off. On 10 April 2026 Kadokawa announced Date A Live F: Last Date, billed as the final chapter. Junji Nishimura directs at Studio Fugaku, and the main cast is returning, though no release date has been confirmed.
