Domestic Girlfriend (Domestic na Kanojo) is a manga by Kei Sasuga. It ran in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine from 2014 to 2020 and finished at 28 volumes. Kodansha publishes it in English.

Natsuo Fujii is a high school student with a hopeless crush on Hina, his teacher. At a mixer he ends up sleeping with a girl called Rui, who tells him plainly that she just wanted to get her first time out of the way. Neither of them expects to see the other again. Then Natsuo’s father announces he is remarrying, and the new stepsisters walking through the door are Hina and Rui.

From there the series does what it says on the tin. It is a melodrama and it never pretends otherwise, but it is a well constructed one. Sasuga takes the characters seriously, gives Hina and Rui their own ambitions outside of Natsuo and lets the fallout of every bad decision actually land. Natsuo’s writing career becomes a real part of the story rather than set dressing.

The series is also famous for its ending, which split readers completely and is still argued about years later. Whichever side you land on, very few romance manga generate that much heat at the finish line.

Diomedea animated the 12 episode anime, which aired from January to March 2019 and covers roughly the first third of the manga. It ends at a point that sent a lot of viewers straight to the books, which is probably the best thing an adaptation like this can do.
