High School DxD is a light novel series by Ichiei Ishibumi with illustrations by Miyama-Zero. It began in 2008 under Fujimi Fantasia Bunko and Yen Press publishes it in English. It has sold well over seven million copies and is one of the defining titles of the ecchi harem genre.

Issei Hyodo is a perverted second year at Kuoh Academy with no prospects and one ambition, which is to become a harem king. A girl finally asks him out and then kills him, because she is a fallen angel and he is carrying something dangerous without knowing it. He wakes up resurrected as a devil in the service of Rias Gremory, the red-haired president of the Occult Research Club and heir to a devil house.

From there the series does something the genre usually skips. It commits to its power system. Devils are organised using chess pieces, each with defined abilities, and the politics between devils, angels and fallen angels drives a plot that gets genuinely complicated. Issei’s Boosted Gear, which doubles his power every ten seconds, turns him into a real threat rather than a bystander.

The fanservice is constant and the show has never pretended otherwise, but the fights are well constructed and Issei’s growth from useless to formidable is played straight.

TNK animated the first three seasons between 2012 and 2015, and Passione took over for High School DxD Hero in 2018. There has still been no official announcement of a fifth season, though the franchise remains active with new novels and spin-offs.
