Kakegurui is a manga written by Homura Kawamoto with art by Toru Naomura. It has been running in Square Enix’s Monthly Gangan Joker since 2014, and Yen Press publishes it in English.

Hyakkaou Private Academy educates the children of Japan’s wealthiest families, and it teaches them one skill above all others. Gambling. Grades and sport count for nothing. The student council runs the school, and the hierarchy is set entirely by how much money you can take off your classmates. Students who fall into debt are marked as house pets and stripped of any standing at all.

Yumeko Jabami transfers in and upends the whole system almost immediately. She is not there to win. She is a compulsive gambler in the truest sense, someone who plays for the thrill of standing at the edge of ruin, and she is perfectly happy to lose enormous sums if the risk is good enough. That makes her impossible to intimidate, which makes her impossible to beat with the usual methods.

The series is built on elaborate games and the cheating that surrounds them, so most matches are really about spotting the trick. It is also extremely stylised, with the character art pushing into deliberately unhinged expressions whenever a bet turns. That look became its signature.

MAPPA animated the first season in July 2017 and the second, Kakegurui xx, in January 2019. Netflix has also produced a live-action drama with two feature films, plus an anime adaptation of the prequel spin-off Kakegurui Twin, which follows Mary Saotome before Yumeko’s arrival.
