Shoko Komi is the most admired student at Itan Private High School. She is tall, elegant and completely silent, and her classmates read that silence as cool detachment. It is not. Komi has severe social anxiety and cannot speak to people, and what she wants more than anything is friends.

Hitohito Tadano is the ordinary boy who ends up sitting next to her and works this out on the first day. When she writes on the blackboard that her goal is to make one hundred friends, he decides to help her get there. That is the whole engine of the series, and it runs for nine years on it.

The comedy comes from the increasingly strange cast that accumulates around her, since most of the people willing to approach Komi are unusual in their own ways.
