NieR:Automata is an action-roguing game developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix. It released in 2017, directed by Yoko Taro with music by Keiichi Okabe, and has sold many millions of copies on the strength of word of mouth alone.

Machines from another world drove humanity off Earth and onto the moon. In response, humanity created androids to take the planet back. The war has been going on for a very long time, and neither side is really winning. You play as 2B, a combat android, alongside her scanner partner 9S, deployed to the surface to clear out machine lifeforms.

The combat is Platinum at its best, fast and precise, with the camera shifting into top-down and side-scrolling shooter sections without warning. The story is where it becomes something else. Finishing the game once gives you a partial picture. Playing again from a different perspective changes what you thought you understood, and the game keeps doing this across multiple endings until the final one asks something of you directly. Very few games have used their own structure this well.

Okabe’s soundtrack is regularly named among the best ever written for a game, and the ruined, overgrown world it plays over has become instantly recognisable.
