Persona is a role-playing game series from Atlus, originally a spin-off of Shin Megami Tensei and now considerably more famous than its parent. The modern run began with Persona 3 in 2006 and continued with Persona 4 and Persona 5.

The structure is what makes it special. You play a high school student living an ordinary life, going to class, taking part-time jobs and building friendships. Then at night you enter another world and fight shadows using a Persona, a manifestation of your own psyche summoned from within. The two halves feed each other directly. Time spent with a friend during the day strengthens what you can do at night, so the social simulation is the progression system.

Each entry has its own tone. Persona 3 is about mortality and is genuinely melancholy. Persona 4 is a small-town murder mystery about accepting parts of yourself you would rather hide. Persona 5 follows a group of student vigilantes stealing the hearts of corrupt adults, and its interface design is so striking that it changed what games think menus can look like. Shoji Meguro’s soundtracks are a huge part of the identity.

The series has spread well beyond games, with anime adaptations for Persona 4 and Persona 5, spin-off fighting and rhythm titles, stage plays and concerts. Persona 3 Reload rebuilt the third game for modern hardware and Persona 6 has now been revealed.
