Rent-A-Girlfriend (Kanojo, Okarishimasu) is a manga by Reiji Miyajima. It has been running in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine since 2017, and Kodansha publishes it in English.

Kazuya Kinoshita has just been dumped, and he is not handling it well. He downloads a rental girlfriend app, books a date out of spite and gets Chizuru Mizuhara, who is flawless at the job. He gives her a bad review out of wounded pride, she drops the act to tell him exactly what she thinks of that, and then his grandmother collapses and Chizuru pretends to be his real girlfriend to keep her spirits up.

That lie snowballs. Their families live near each other, so the arrangement cannot be quietly dropped, and Kazuya keeps paying for rentals he cannot afford to maintain it. Along the way he collects Ruka, who wants to be his real girlfriend and will not be talked out of it, Mami, his ex, and Sumi, a rental girlfriend too shy to speak.

Kazuya is a famously frustrating protagonist, and the series knows it. The appeal is watching him slowly become someone worth Chizuru’s time and watching her ambitions as an actress get the same weight as the romance.

TMS Entertainment has animated four seasons, the first in July 2020, the second in 2022, the third in 2023 and the fourth in July 2025, with the manga still going.
