That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken) began as a web novel by Fuse in 2013, with light novel illustrations by Mitz Vah. Kodansha publishes it in English and the franchise has sold tens of millions of copies.

Satoru Mikami is a 37 year old office worker who is stabbed on the street and dies wishing he had done more with his life. He wakes up as a slime at the bottom of a cave, which is the weakest monster in the setting. He also has two skills, Predator and Great Sage, which let him absorb anything he eats and analyse it perfectly, and that combination breaks the world open very quickly.

The first thing he meets is a dying storm dragon named Veldora, who gives him the name Rimuru Tempest. From there the series turns into something unusual for the genre. Rather than a quest, it becomes nation building. Rimuru unites the goblins, then the ogres, then the dwarves and the lizardmen, and spends most of the series doing infrastructure, diplomacy and trade agreements while occasionally destroying an army.

That focus on building rather than adventuring is why it stands out, and the cast that accumulates around Rimuru, including Shion, Shuna, Milim and Benimaru, is large and genuinely well used.

Eight Bit has animated the whole run. Season one aired across 2018 and 2019, season two in 2021, the film Scarlet Bond in 2022 and season three from April to September 2024. Season four premiered on 3 April 2026 and is scheduled to run across five cours, making it by far the largest season yet.
