The Idolmaster is a Bandai Namco franchise that began in 2005 as an arcade game, which is an unusual origin for something this large. It has since grown into one of the biggest multimedia properties in Japan, spanning games, anime, manga, concerts and an enormous discography.

The premise stays consistent across every branch. You play as a producer at a talent agency, working with a group of young women to take them from unknown trainees to top idols. Progress comes through lessons, auditions, communication and scheduling, and the appeal is watching individual characters grow into performers over a long stretch of time.

The franchise has split into several distinct branches, each with its own cast and tone. The original 765 Production line is the foundation. Cinderella Girls has by far the largest roster. Million Live, SideM, Shiny Colours and Gakuen Idolmaster all came later, with the last of those rebuilding the core gameplay for modern phones and drawing a lot of new players in.

The live concerts are a genuine phenomenon in their own right, with voice actresses performing in character to arena crowds, and the music output is enormous.

A-1 Pictures animated the 2011 television series, which is still the best-regarded entry point, followed by a film in 2014. Cinderella Girls got its own series in 2015, and Shiny Colours, Million Live and the others have all had adaptations since.
