The Quintessential Quintuplets (Go-Toubun no Hanayome) is a manga by Negi Haruba. It ran in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine from 2017 to 2020 and finished at 14 volumes. Kodansha publishes it in English.

Fuutarou Uesugi is top of his year and broke. He takes a well-paid tutoring job to help his family, and the students turn out to be five identical sisters who have just transferred to his school and are all failing badly enough to be held back. None of them want a tutor. All of them are used to getting their own way.

The hook is set up in the first pages. A flash forward shows Fuutarou at his wedding, marrying one of the quintuplets, and the entire series is the question of which one. That single framing device turned the manga into one of the most argued-about romance series of its era, with genuine campaigns behind each sister.

They are distinct enough to make the debate real. Ichika is an aspiring actress, Nino is hostile and the most protective of the group, Miku is withdrawn and obsessed with warlord history, Yotsuba is relentlessly energetic and Itsuki is stubborn and eats constantly. Haruba does the work of giving each one a full arc rather than a gimmick.

Tezuka Productions animated the first season in 2019 and Bibury Animation Studios took over for the second in 2021, followed by the film in 2022 which adapts the ending. A further special has since been released.
