Undertale is a role-playing game made almost entirely by Toby Fox, who wrote it, coded it and composed the soundtrack. It funded through Kickstarter and released in 2015, and it became one of the most influential indie games ever made.

A child falls into a mountain and lands in the Underground, where monsters were sealed away after losing a war against humanity long ago. The goal is to get home. The twist is that you never have to kill anything. Every encounter can be resolved by talking, flirting, complimenting or simply refusing to fight, and the game tracks what you choose.

That mechanic is the whole design. Monsters have names, personalities and lives, and killing one removes them permanently from the world you keep walking through. The game notices, remembers and comments, and the difference between a pacifist run and a genocide run is not a different ending screen but a fundamentally different experience.

Toby Fox’s writing is very funny, which makes the serious moments land much harder. Sans, Papyrus, Undyne, Alphys and Toriel have all become permanent fixtures of internet culture, and the soundtrack is one of the most widely covered in gaming.

It is a short game, around six hours, and it has generated an extraordinary amount of fan work in the decade since. Its sequel, Deltarune, is releasing chapter by chapter and reached its fifth chapter in June 2026.
